Why do you need liposuction?

Years ago, when liposuction was heard first, it was thought that only crazy people who were so fond of beauty could dare. These days, liposuction has become one of the most common procedures in aesthetic surgery. It is a fat removal procedure tackling fat in particular regions of the body.

Liposuction takes the fat out with the assistance of a fine cannula that can enter through a small hole.

The terms such as lipectomy, lipoplasty also mean the same procedure.

Our body features, which are our genetic heritage, may sometimes be pretty different from the body shape we desire.

You can diet and exercise regularly for years, and you cannot get rid of these unwanted fat deposits. Even if you are not overweight, there may be disproportionate parts of your body. In such cases, the remedy you have been seeking is liposuction.

Are you a good candidate for liposuction?

patient safety for liposuctionFirst of all, remember that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. It is a cosmetic procedure intended to achieve body contouring and body reshaping only.

The first necessity for liposuction is that the general health conditions of the person must be good. Clean medical history, well medical conditions without systemic disease such as heart disease are essential.

Those who are not chubby or obese but have fat accumulation on particular regions of their bodies are suitable candidates. Or if a person is overweight / obese, after losing weight, this can benefit them also.

Liposuction is an ideal solution for the removal of fat tissues. It is not a proper solution for a patient who says, “I have gained weight so much, I want to look a bit slimmer,” because the procedure helps to reshape and to correct body lines only.

Ideally, liposuction is useful for people:

  • Who have normal weight or maybe a little more than normal
  • Who have a fat accumulation more on particular regions of the body than on other regions

What will I aim in liposuction?

My objective is to make you happy by achieving a proportionate body contour and giving a more appealing shape without a surgical mark. So, removal of fat deposits will improve your body image and restore your self-confidence.

Some patients seek a solution as they experienced a failed liposuction before. Skin surface irregularities or under-correction are the most common complaint of the patients consulting me. Sometimes, their corrective surgery challenges are even more complex than the primary surgery. Therefore your first liposuction is crucial. The goal is to achieve the best outcome in a single shot.

Where will I perform your surgery?

Joint Commission International (JCI) works to improve patient safety and quality of health care in the international community by offering education, publications, advisory services, and international accreditation and certification. It is the recognised global leader in healthcare accreditation with the highest standards built on maximum safety and minimum risk.

There are a couple of hospital options that I affiliated with, which accredited by JCI. I will perform your surgery at either one of the distinguished, cutting edge hospitals in Dubai. You may opt for one during the consultation.

Which areas can liposuction reduce the fat?

treatment areas

Treatment areas of liposuction

Liposuction is available anywhere on the body where extra fat tissue has accumulated. Mostly applied regions are:

  • Face: Fat reduction of cheeks and neck (double chin)
  • Body: Reducing belly fat as well as back, buttocks, chest and waist
  • Extremities: Fat removal of upper arms, thighs and inner knees

Persistent fat does not burn in spite of all kinds of diets and exercises.

Especially in women, fat tissue accumulates on the hips, thighs, abdomen and waist regions. Whereas in men, fat tissue accumulates mostly on the belly, waist and chest region. Both vaser and classical methods are useful to remove belly fat.

The goal of the liposuction is to achieve a proportionate appearance of these regions with the other body parts.

One of the most important availability criteria for liposuction is skin characteristics as well. As the years go on, the elasticity of the skin is lost.

After fat removal underneath the skin, the skin inherently loosens. Normally due to skin elasticity, the skin shrinks after the surgery and becomes tense again. Therefore, the skin adapts to its new position easily. In patients older than 45, the skin may not adapt as when they were at a younger age, because the elasticity of the skin lessens or loses by aging.

The skin must be firm and elastic to achieve a good result in liposuction. If so, the skin will adapt and shrink easily. If the skin is loose and elasticity was lost, alternative method combinations such as skin tightening are useful.

Liposuction provides incredibly good results and well patient experience:

  • when the technique is proper
  • when the patient selection is right

How much fat can be removed through the liposuction?

The removable fat amount within the safety limits without risk is 5-6% of your body weight. In other words, if you are weighing 70 kg, up to 4 liters of fat is removable within the safety limit of liposuction.

If the removed fat amount exceeds the safety limit:

  • Fat tissue metabolism disorders
  • Fluid-electrolyte imbalance
  • A decrease in blood elements

may result.

The Methods of Liposuction in Dubai

Vaser Liposuction

Vaser liposuction is the new technology in body reshaping surgery. This technique melts the fat units by sound energy.

A cannula or thin tube which is in connection with aspirator, vacuums the melted fat. Heating by energy also contributes to the increased production of collagen that adds smoothness and strength to the skin. A beautiful, tight, and thin body is acheived.

The most obvious difference is recovery time. In the vaser liposuction, the incisions on the skin are so small that only one stitch, if that, is needed. During the procedure, bleeding is minimal and often bloodless. Therefore, swelling and bruising seen after vaser liposuction are much less than that after the classical technique. Since the skin incisions are too small and bleeding is minimum, wounds heal faster and the recovery period shortens.

Vaser liposuction reshapes the tissue, even if very little fat deposits are removed. In terms of patient safety and surgical risks, vaser liposuction techniques are pretty safe methods. You will be able to resume your work life a few days after having the procedure.

The fat quantity that vaser liposuction can remove is limited as compared to the classical technique. Therefore this method is not a proper option for a substantial amount of fat removal.

Classical Liposuction

In classical liposuction, I cut the skin 3-4 mm near the suction area. Through the skin incision, I insert the cannulas in a diameter of 2, 3 or 4 mm underneath the skin. The out end of the cannula is connected with a vacuum aspirator device. After I insert the cannula underneath the skin, I move it back and forth. The tip of the cannula disintegrates the fat tissue. An aspirator connected to the other end of the cannula vacuums disintegrated thin fat particles.

Which liposuction method is suitable for you?

If your main concern is fat reduction and you need a substantial amount of fat removal, the classical liposuction is better for you.

If you do not have much fat but want your body parts to be of a higher definition and of finely shaped, vaser liposuction is better. For example, six-pack creation.

How will I perform the liposuction?

In terms of patient safety, optimum technical conditions are essential.

Before starting the procedure, I will mark the areas on your body and draw a liposuction map.

The procedure will be under either local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the fat removal area. I prefer local anesthesia for limited areas, and general anesthesia for larger areas. It is an outpatient procedure when the liposuction involves a limited area.

At the beginning of the procedure, I infiltrate a special solution called tumescent to reduce bleeding and pain (Tumescent liposuction technique). Thus, both blood loss during the procedure and pain after the procedure are significantly minimised.

I will cut 3-4 mm of the skin, enough to let the cannula to be inserted inside. Cutting the skin on places such as deep folds and joint surfaces and the area covered by a bikini ensures the marks are not visible.

Removing the fat from the deep layer is the key point to avoid skin surface irregularities. I will double-check the thickness of the remaining fat to secure the correction quality. In the end, I will close the skin incisions with a few small stitches.

Since the skin incisions are in hidden places, the evidence of the incision marks will not be noticeable. They will disappear in a few months.

How is the recovery period after liposuction?

Liposuction Post-Operative Instructions

If you have liposuction alone and it didn’t involve a large area, you will be able to leave the hospital on the same day. For patient safety, one-day hospitalisation is necessary if massive fat is removed.

Almost all my patients ask me when they will be able to begin daily activities. No need to ask me. When you attempt to do something, just listen to your body. Your body will already say “Go on” or “Stop.” Then you can limit your activities yourself accordingly.

You will be able to take a shower and fulfill your regular life after 2-3 days.

Swelling (edema) and bruising occur after the procedure. The sensation of itching, tension, hardness and shrinkage are common after the procedure.

When you take a look at the liposuction areas, it may seem like no fat tissue has gone. As if nothing has changed. It is normal, no worries. Because swelling (edema) replaces the removed fat. The swelling gradually reduces in 15-20 days. Your actual body line begins to appear after weeks.

As the swelling reduces, you will notice that liposuction areas are not soft as they were before. This arises from cellular wound healing activity as a natural consequence of the body repairing mechanism.

The bruising that occurs after the procedure gradually disappears within 5-15 days.

You will be able to swim after 15 days as that’s enough time to heal the skin incisions.

How will you feel yourself during the recovery period?

Diagram shows, how you will feel yourself emotionally during the recovery period. The effect of the procedure may impair your emotional status. However, as time goes on, you will recover and get rid of surgical effects; and eventually, you will gain your confidence back.

Is procedure painful?

Concomitant mild pain may occur on the first day after the procedure. The pain you will feel is not so severe and pain medication can relieve pain easily. You will not feel pain at rest. The pain will only be felt in motion or when you press your hand on the liposuction area. The pain is not so severe.

You will be able to mobilise with the assistance of an accompanying person 2-3 hours after liposuction. Even when massive fat is removed, you will be able to mobilise without assistance the next day.

Within a few days, you will feel good enough to move around. Do not forget that, the sooner you get mobile, the sooner you recover. That is the general rule of liposuction.

If your work is not heavy, you will be able to resume to work and even travel.

Resuming to casual life and physical activities as soon as possible reduces the risks after the procedure. You need 2-3 weeks to begin heavier activities depending on the recovery process.

Should I wear special garment?

liposuction garment in recovery period

Liposuction garments that you should wear

Wearing the garment or tight socks for the first 3-4 weeks is crucial following liposuction. Such garments ensure adaptation of the skin to underlying tissue and shaping of the surface.

Softening of the skin due to the lessening the swelling, gaining the normal consistency take about 3 months. That means you will see the ultimate result after a couple of months.

Which season is the best time for liposuction?

Liposuction is feasible at any time of the year. The ideal time depends on your decision. Wearing the garment in the summertime is another consideration.

Patients who are available for liosuction only in the summer can also have the procedure. However do not forget to use sun protection creams. Sunlight may lead to hyperpigmentation or discoloration on the liposuction area.

Even if the body shape does not settle within a few weeks, the swelling reduces, and the bruising disappears completely in 2 weeks.

Will the result be permanent? What if I gain weight after having liposuction?

Regional fat deposits are challenges that you cannot burn in spite of diet and exercise. The only definitive and permanent way of getting rid of fat deposits is liposuction.

If you do not pay attention to your dietary habits, you may gain weight afterwards. Almost all my patients ask this question: “What if I gain weight after the procedure?”. Here is the answer…

Liposuction procedure removes the fat permanently. Because the fat cells in the body are not proliferative. The fat cells in the body proliferate up to the age of 10-11, then proliferation stops. Afterward, the volume of the fat cells increases as the body grows or you gain weight. When a particular fat amount in a region goes out, the number of fat cells decreases and remains constant. The remaining fat cells do not proliferate again.

Weight alteration pattern with and without liposuction

If you gain weight afterward, only the cellular content, therefore the size of the cells increases. Hence, new fat deposit disperses throughout the body proportionately, no accumulation in a particular region emerges again. Liposuction regions gain weight only as much as they share on their part.

Therefore, the obtained results are permanent. The image above shows the fat accumulation pattern after weight gaining.

What are the risks and complications of liposuction?

patient satisfaction rate after liposuction

Patient satisfaction rate after liposuction

The complication rates of liposuction are the compilation of medical literature data. The rates may vary depending on the patient’s medical conditions, age, skin elasticity, fat amount and surgeon’s experience. That does not mean you will experience all those complications.

Although, the risk and complication rate is never zero, thorough medication and surgical techniques provide well patient experience and satisfaction.

I divide the risk and complications of liposuction into two groups:

Medical risk and complications

Post-operative soft tissue infection is pretty rare following the procedure. As a precaution, antibiotic medication can prevent post-operative infection risk.

In mega-liposuction cases, excessive fat reduction above 6% of total body weight may lead to systemic complications such as fat metabolism disorders, fluid-mineral imbalance, and vascular occlusions. By the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the safety limit of fat reduction is up to 5% of total body weight. In my practice, I usually remove the fat 2-4% of the body weight. Therefore I have not experienced such serious complications.

Cosmetic risk and complications

Cosmetic complications are all related to the plastic surgeon’s experience. Asymmetries, skin surface irregularities may occur due to the removed fat amount and its distribution. Deep plan liposuction and checking the fat thickness during the procedure avoid skin irregularities and contour deformities.

Sunlight may lead to skin color changes and darkening (Hyperpigmentation). So, you should avoid sun exposure until the swelling dissolves completely.

After all, liposuction provides a permanent and drastic improvement in your body shape.
