Why do you need brachioplasty procedure?
Both the effect of aging and the weight alterations lead to sagging and loosening in the upper parts of their arms in many people.
Especially short-sleeved t-shirts or sleeveless clothes exhibits your arms. If you raise your arms slightly, the sagging and looseness becomes more prominent.
While loosening is noticeable in most people as they are aging, the problem is also obvious in younger people who lose weight.
Arm lift surgery, called brachioplasty can correct the loose skin on the upper part of the arm.
When you lift the arm so that it is parallel to the ground, the skin excess in the area between the elbow and the armpit is revealed.
If your arms have excess fat without skin laxity and sagging, the tissue is still firm. In such cases, liposuction procedure which will not cause a scar on the arm is a more preferable option.

Some patients seek a solution as they experienced a failed arm lift surgery before. Poor scarring due to slipshod suturing of surgical incisions is the most common complaint of the patients consulting me. Sometimes, their corrective surgery challenges are even more complex than the primary surgery. Therefore your first surgery is crucial. The goal is to achieve the best outcome in a single shot.
Where will I perform your surgery?

How will I perform the procedure?
Depending on the progress of the age, skin loosening may occur. In such cases, liposuction is not the proper option. The proper method is surgical arm lift. In other words, removal of the fat excess together with skin excess to ensure normal skin tightness.
During the procedure, I cut off loose tissue on the arm together with the skin. Then, I stitch the skin for tightening. Since the skin excess had gone, a scar is necessarily formed along the cut line of the removed skin.
I design the surgical scar as it will not appear when viewed from the front, side or backside. Namely, the scar will locate on the aspect of the arm in contact with the body. Hence, the scar will take place that will not be visible even you wear sleeveless clothes.
Prior the brachioplasty, I will mark the skin excess which needs removal. Surgical procedure requires general anesthesia. The procedure consists of skin removal and suturing the wound edges together. Brachioplasty lasts about 2-4 hours, depending on how much skin excess to be removed.
How is the recovery period?
Pain medication reduces concomitant mild pain after the procedure. You will be able to mobilize 2-3 hours after an arm lift. If you feel good enough you may leave the hospital on the same day.
However, if you need some rest, you may leave the hospital on the next day as well. Swelling and bruising which is inherent may occur on the back side of your arm. Swelling and bruising disappear completely in 1-2 weeks.
You will be able to travel 2-3 days after the procedure. However, driving yourself takes longer.
2-3 days after the arm lift procedure, you can take a shower. Although the recovery period is variable, you will resume your casual life after 1 week.
I always stitch the skin with absorbable and hidden sutures, so you will not feel stitch removal stress.
Almost all my patients ask me when they will be able to begin daily activities. No need to ask me. When you attempt to do something, just listen to your body. Your body will tell you “Go on” or “Stop”. Then you can limit your activities yourself accordingly.
However, beginning heavy work and sportive activities may take 4 weeks.
Even though the surgery leaves a scar, the results of the arm lift surgery are satisfying.
How will you feel yourself after the procedure?
Diagram shows, how you will feel yourself emotionally during the recovery period of the arm lift. The effect of the surgery may impair your emotional status. However, as time goes on, you will recover and get rid of surgical effects; and eventually, you will gain your confidence back.
What are the risks and complications?

The complication rates of an arm lift are the compilation of medical literature data and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The rates may vary depending on the patient’s medical conditions. That does not mean you will experience all those complications.
Obese, diabetic, but less likely smokers, are more prone to complications.
Hematoma (blood collection inside the wound) and infection risks are general risks of all surgical procedures. However, thorough surgical technique and proper medication minimize the risk of bleeding and infection following the arm lift surgery.
Wound dehiscence and delayed wound healing may occur following the brachioplasty, especially with obese and smoker patients.
Although it occurs rarely, nerve injuries during the surgery may cause temporary sensational changes around the surgical areas.
Minor asymmetries and surface irregularities that are tolerable may occur between the left and right arm.
Poor wound healing and scar formation (Hypertrophic scarring) following the arm lift surgery, which may need a revision may occur.
In case of any complication, it may bother you, and prolong the recovery period. However, it can be managed and treated as well. If you are healthy and not obese, the complication is pretty low.
