Forehead lift surgery simplified
Why do you need?
Upper face lift surgery is also called a forehead lift. The procedure, as you can easily understand the name is useful to tighten the forehead and temple area to lift the eyebrows.
The procedure improves a tired expression arising from drooped brows and forehead wrinkles arising from aging. Also you will have a more refreshed, younger, and more vivid look.
There are two techniques described for tightening the forehead:
- Classic forehead lift
- Endoscopic forehead lift
In the classic technique, the skin incision is 3-4 cm beyond the hairline throughout from temple area to the other temple area. Then the forehead skin is lifted upwards. Subsequently, redundant skin is cut off, and it is sewn up again in a taut manner. This method has only a historical value.
Nowadays, endoscopic technique has become popular.

How will I perform endoscopic lifting?
I always use endoscopic forehead lift technique. Endoscopic forehead lift requires local anesthesia supported with deep sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure will last about 1.5 hours.
In endoscopic forehead lift, I cut the skin in a length of 1.5-2 cm beyond the hairline. Skin incision is done on both the temple area, and one on both the right and left part of the forehead. Then I place an endoscopic camera with a diameter of about 0,5 cm through these incisions. Concomitantly, I also place specially designed instruments for endoscopic surgery through other skin cuts.
Through the camera vision, I elevate the skin off the bone downward to the level of the eyebrows. It is very easy to elevate the skin with the camera image. After elevation of the skin off the bone, I weaken the muscles that cause the lines on the forehead by fine scoring. Thus skin becomes released. Finally, I lift the skin upwards and fix it into a tighter position.
There are many various methods for fixation. Some surgeons prefer to make a small hole through the bone and fix the skin of the forehead with the stitches passed through the hole in the bone. While some surgeons prefer to fix it with screws of 3-4 mm. However, others fix using specially designed hangers on the bone with screws.
Either of these methods is available to hold the brow skin tighter on the bone. In terms of the surgical result, it doesn’t matter which one the surgeon uses. Finally I close the skin cuts with absorbable stitches.
Thus, the forehead region becomes tightener and the drooping of the eyebrows lifted. Through the endoscopic technique developed after the classical procedure no scar remains along the scalp.
How is the recovery after the procedure?
A few hours after the operation is over, you can get rid of the anesthesia effect and mobilize. You can leave the hospital on the same day.
You will not experience severe pain after surgery. Mild pain that is concomitant is tolerable. Pain medication relieves the pain.
After surgery, the only discomfort you will feel but need time to get used to, is tension on your forehead.
As the surrounding area of the eyes is quite loose, it inherently swells and bruises in this area. Depending on your sensitivity, variable severity of swelling and bruising occur in all patients.
Putting the ice onto this region on the first day helps swelling and bruising to lessen. Therefore it is better to put ice around the eyes until sleeping at night.
How will you feel yourself after the procedure?
Diagram shows, how you will feel yourself emotionally during the recovery period after forehead lift surgery. The effect of the surgery may impair your emotional status. However, as time goes on, you will recover and get rid of surgical effects; and eventually, you will gain your confidence back.
When can you return your normal life?
Even on the first day, you often feel good enough to fulfill your needs. Forehead lifting will not make you dependent on the bed. From the moment you mobilize, you will have the ability to move.
The more you move, the more confident you are, the better you feel, the faster you recover.
The next day when you return to your home, you can continue your home life without being dependent on the bed.
Swellings and bruises disappear within 1 week in the course of recovery process. You will need 7 days rest to return to your work life.
If you consider that you can work at the office despite the swelling… why not? You can return to work even after 4-5 days, according to your own decision.
Flights are also possible during this period.
What are the risks and complications?
Surgical outcomes of the forehead lift which has no serious risk in terms of surgery are pretty satisfactory.
