One of the most counterintuitive things I explain in my consultations in Dubai is that a patient unhappy with the size of their nose sometimes needs to look at their chin. A note on scope: this is about the aesthetic principle of proportion, not the mechanics of the operation. How an implant is chosen, designed, positioned, or compared with moving the bone are each their own subjects, and I link to them where they arise. Why the chin is the anchor of the profile

In profile, the face reads as a silhouette, and the chin is the endpoint of that silhouette’s lower half. When the chin projects appropriately, the forehead, nose, lips, and chin fall into a relationship that the eye reads as balanced. Against the nose, it provides the counterweight: bringing a recessed chin forward can make a prominent nose look more proportionate without touching the nose at all. Proportion, thirds, and the profile line

Aesthetically, the face is often read in three horizontal thirds, from hairline to brow, brow to base of nose, and base of nose to chin. The chin anchors that lowest third, so its projection and height determine whether the lower face is in proportion with the middle and upper thirds above it. A deficient chin visually shortens and unbalances the lower third.

The profile line running from the nose through the lips to the chin is the other classic reference.
